Chapter Nine

Baze couldn't believe it. He nearly dropped his blaster to the ground, hands shaking as he regained control over the weapon. A pause, and Baze seemed to rise up in stature, body shifting upright and tall. His eyes glimmered, a fire restored, blazing in the black depths of the pupils.

They too survived the blast!!

"See, I knew we could find them. The Force led me to that conclusion!" Chirrut beamed, somehow knowing that something about his friend had changed. His reaction was definitely positive in response to this news.

"Still, we have to focus, Chirrut. Don't run towards the area like a chicken with its head off." Baze cautioned his friend with a grin. He couldn't exactly voice it in words, but he was too happy to hear his little sister and the captain were alive.

"Where are they?"

Chirrut closed his eyes, seeming to enter in a world of his own. A moment later, he stated simply, "Inside that base you pointed out to me."

Baze could see the towering building in the corner of his eye. There was still danger here, and until they could find out what the two were up to, Baze and Chirrut couldn't celebrate too quickly yet. Both surveyed the area. They would keep a lookout, same as they had always done since first arriving on Scarif. This time, there was more purpose in their movements, more meaning. Now that they knew two members of their team were still fighting, they too, would fight with all of their breath, not daring to relax until everyone was safe.

The winding doors and pathways made Jyn and Cassian feel like two mice searching for some kind of rare cheese. The cheese being a ship that may or may not be there.

How long had they already been present in the base? Surely an alarm would have gone off by now, but none blared out. Jyn felt slightly unsettled, but she didn't act on that feeling.

Cassian and Jyn picked up the pace, skidding around a corner. Then, right before them, only a few feet away, a fighter ship gleamed, white lights reflecting off its sleek surface. They had no time to gawk at the design. Robotic voices resounded in the large space, shouting out orders. Casting a glance around, Cassian let out a curse as he saw the sheer amount of stormtroopers in some kind of formation. At least 10 of them stood arranged in a line. A minute later they dispersed, going separate ways.

Was this too risky? Yes. K2 would have told them the probability of failure was over 95%. Cassian tugged at Jyn's arm, pulling her away where she herself would have probably, impulsively charged towards the mass.

She gave him a fiery glare, whispering fiercely, "let me go!"

"Do you have eyes Jyn?" Cassian hissed. "Clearly you don't, because there are more than just 5 or 6 troopers out there! This is too risky. We have to go back."

"Stop being a coward Cassian!"

"I'm not a coward!! This is called being smart!"

Jyn scoffed, then looked at the ship again. Cassian could see her eyes were filled with longing. He knew she wanted to leave this planet. It was no paradise to her. He felt the same, but had no idea why Jyn had such a strong sense of urgency in her actions. His mind worked quickly in the moment. Right now they needed to get out, or get killed.

He could see her defiance, but the resolve was melting away as she calmed down, making sense of the situation. Letting out a breath of resignation, (or to him, annoyance)  Jyn turned away, muttering, "Well then, let's go."

His heart leaped when saw them run out, two silhouettes framed against the crimson orange sky. Jyn had a furious look on her face, while Cassian was leading the way, motioning to her to follow him. Baze could see Cassian was limping though, every step sending him what looked to be a shock of pain.

"There they are Chirrut!"

Baze turned to share the news, but not a soul occupied the space next to him. Chirrut was one step ahead of him,
turning away from the base.

Baze quickly caught up to Chirrut. Upon seeing Jyn and Cassian, he had been happy. But what happened to cause the two of them to look so weary?
