Chapter Two
Baze recoiled from haze and smoke, feeling the heat run along his body, expecting a searing pain to flash through his body. But it never came.
A soft glow in his heart remained instead, the feeling a surprise to him - Never before had this emotion resonated so powerfully within him. Be one with the Force....Chirrut's voice echoed in his mind.
Baze looked left and right, and saw the world bathed in a golden glow. He peered through haze and smoke at the spot where Chirrut was, and noticed a similar force field around his friend. What was protecting them?
Chirrut knew a force field had surrounded them. He knew, because somehow, HE had been the one to conjure it. In what he thought were his last moments, peace and gratitude welled up within him, expanding to block out the darkness and despair that came with battle. The Force, he believed, had answered his call. All he had been doing was praying, and out of the blue the glow had appeared. He hoped whatever the mystical force was, it would protect the others he called friends as well.
Jyn's hands shook as she lurched forward, grasping the switch that would send her father's message to the Alliance ships far above the planet. Muscles straining, with a pull, the switch locked in place and Jyn heard above her: "Transmitting"..." Transmitting."
She slumped against the walls of the pillar up above Citadel tower, grunting with the effort. Her mission was complete. She wanted to yell in triumph, but made no sound. Instead she smiled wide, looking over at her comrade, Cassian.
The shadow in her heart was slowly fading away - The metaphorical cave she had been trapped in since her parents' deaths had suffocated her spirit, holding within it worries, fear, and darkness, yet now she was feeling more free with every passing moment.
Jyn stumbled over to Cassian's side, his tattered frame revealing he was much worse off than she was. He had scaled walls, maneuvered under volleys of blaster shots, fallen to what seemed to be his death - despite all of his injuries, he had come back against all odds to see her, to save her from Krennic.
The nightmare with the white uniform had immediately collapsed on the ground, the fringes of his cape sizzling with the remnants of the blaster shot. Moments before he had stood, weapon in hand, ready to send Jyn into Death's hands. Jyn's eyes burned with ferocity and deep hatred. Krennic, the man who had hurt all those she felt dear. He had killed her parents, nearly killed Cassian, by appearing where he was least wanted, poking his nose into places he shouldn't have been. Like a predator heading for their prey, Jyn wanted to claw the remains of him into nothing. He deserved it. But a strong grip jerked her back, a voice gently demanding, "Let it go. Jyn." She heard Cassian, and with heaving breaths, stopped her forward stride, but not before she gave Krennic one last glare that contained all of her anger directed towards him. She wanted to kick him in the shin, kick him anywhere, hear him pleading for mercy. But Jyn knew that Krennic would not swallow down his pride and admit defeat. At least the Death Star would get him, Jyn conceded.
Jyn then let out a harsh laugh, as she realized ironically, she too would meet the same end by the laser. Yet, her view of death was not filled with fear, as Krennic's would. She had long expected it to swoop upon her and take her into the stars where she could meet her father and mother, and see them once more. Jyn heard Cassian's voice, quiet and weary as he asked, "You think... anybody's listening?" Jyn returned his look. Although shaky and unsteady on her two feet, her voice was strong as she replied, "I do--- Someone's out there."
The two leaned on each other for support, though Jyn was bearing most of Cassian's weight. She pressed the button to access the elevator, and they hobbled inside. In the elevator, the two stepped away from each other, unsure of what to say or act.
She could barely see him in the dark. All that existed was ragged breathing - Cassian's lungs screaming for oxygen, his side burning, as if ruptured from the fall. Meanwhile, Jyn's body ached from exhaustion, demanding her to stop, while her mind urged her to stay alive no matter the cost, even though the transmission had already been sent away from this planet.
Jyn's voice resounded in the empty darkness: "Baze. Chirrut. Bodhi. I wonder if they made it." For once, she did not think about herself.
Cassian did not reply. Even without saying, both knew that the rest of their team had probably not survived the war. All they could have done was hold out, stalling for time so that Jyn could reach the Alliance.
