Chapter Four

Bodhi hadn't expected to survive. He didn't deserve to live. He had done his part, connecting tihe line to the ship in order to transmit the signal. He had seen the titanium grenade roll in, slowly, ready to detonate and messing with his mind and emotions - the last thing he felt for himself was a mix of fear and pride, regret over what he had lost, but joy he was able to complete what Galen had asked him to do.

The ship from which he last the last of the world in burst in a pillar of flame, electric sparks the color of the hottest sun dancing in different directions. Shards of the ship flew towards the sand, up towards the sky, left & right towards the sea.
He shouldn't have lived. Yet some flash of brilliant gold had blinded Bodhi's view of the coast that had been tempting him after he secured the cable to the communication port. He didn't feel pain. He only felt hope, not fear, and realized, maybe his story hadn't yet ended. The pilot could only wait until the destruction of the ship passed before he dared step from the rubble.

Chirrut felt his body pulse with a great amount of energy. The sensation faded, as the physical exertion of maintaining the energy was too great. Despite his worn look, Chirrut was not severely injured. His only need was rest, especially so since his prayer had let him create a force field around not just himself, but the rest of the team as well. When Chirrut opened his eyes, he looked to the side, to see the Scarif beach in ruins. Listening carefully, he couldn't hear anything at first - But he sensed life nearby.

"Baze?" Chirrut called out. His hand feeling the dry sand underneath, it skimmed over the rough surface until grainy sand became hardened wood. His staff was intact, unaffected by the blast. Pushing himself up from the sand, Chirrut heard a faint reply, and walked to the source of the sound, deliberately stepping over piles of metal and sand shifting under his sandals. Baze's footsteps thundered on the ground as he ran towards Chirrut - he was breathless when he made it to the blind man's side. His closest friend was alive!

"I thought you were dead!"
Baze gaped in disbelief, part angry, part relieved.

"No need to get worked up. I am fine. You are fine. That is what matters."

"What happened?? What was that golden light?" Baze questioned Chirrut.

"Patience, my friend. The light was a form of protection from the blast. There is no need to fear. I am sure it has protected Jyn and the others as well. We shall look for them." Chirrut stretched out his staff in front of him and headed in a new direction. He was sure the team would reunite. It was only a matter of time. As Chirrut walked forward, Baze trailed behind, on the lookout for any enemies that might approach them. Not that he expected any to appear, but just in case...

"Jyn."

"Jyn. You're safe. We're fine."

She heard the voice in her ear, but had no idea where she was. Had she joined the starry ranks above or remained on the ground of Scarif?
The last thing she remembered was the warm arms around her and the Death Star's cloud surging towards her.

The world was a blur as Jyn blinked. Her head was pounding, mouth dry with lack of water.
How was she still alive??
Then she remembered: Cassian was with her when the blast was supposed to have killed them. She raised her head to look around and spotted him crouched on the ground.
He turned to look at her: "You're ok." A passive statement, but some hint of relief hidden there.

Jyn stared at his disheveled frame for a minute. She was here on Scarif?
Part of her wanted to be back with her parents. A large part in fact. Not on this desolate landscape with nobody else on it except him.

Cassian let out a harsh cough. Jyn recalled his previously injury, his plummet from the data schematics tower, and deduced that the pain from that still hadn't faded. Her conjecture was confirmed when she saw him wince as he tried to stand up, an angry looking gash across his side. Scrapes laced his arms. But right now, any concern she had for him was overshadowed by the situation she was now in. A cold chill laced through her after the heat of battle and struggle. Jyn used her hands to push herself off the ground. She wasn't going to stay here waiting to die.
